Rhodes: May 26, 2012: Sub- page

Here again is the map I showed you on the general page for 26 May...but this has had labels and explanations added.

-

A: Our ship sailed into the harbor at Rhodes just after breakfast, tied up where the "floating city" is in the image above. We were probably less than half the length of that monstrosity. Ecuador has been very wise. It limits access to the Galapagos. "A friend to all is a friend to none." In other words, when you make a place floating- city- friendly, yes, "everyone" can visit... and when they visit, the experience is seriously degraded by the swarms of tourists which have overwhelmed the destination. As we were coming in, I imagined we were entering the harbor whee the Colossus of Rhodes stood. Not so. That guarded the harbor marked with the "b". The colossus, wondrous as it was, probably didn't stand astride the harbor mouth as history has claimed and children are often mis-taught. (The Wikipedia article the link above will take you to discusses this in, to me interesting, detail.) However the statue, I would guess, stood at the end of the eastern arm of harbour "b", so while I was standing on deck, imagining it, I probably imagined it in the right place. I was just confused about whether we were entering the harbor it guarded! Anyway...

B: (Harbor. See above.)

-

This little fort just SW of "b" on map, photographed from NE of fort, as we arrived. And yes, the water really was this color, not infrequently.

We set off at 8:40, driving around the northern end of the island to visit....

C: Ancient theatre and stadium, below temple of Apollo. Rhodes is so culturally blessed that the stadium and theatre, both in excellent shape, didn't (until a moment ago!) even get a mention in the Wikipedia article on Rhodes. The theatre is 60 feet across, stadium 750 feet long.

D: By just before 9 o'clock, we were entering the ancient fortifications via the Amboise gate. Had an excellent tour of the magnificent "Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes"... a wonderful castle... and then...

E: ... after visit to castle, from 10:50 had rest of day inside the medieval walls of the ancient city. Which I have written up in connection with....

My high resolution map of inside the medieval city! PLEASE visit! (You are only forgiven not doing so if you are using a low bandwidth internet connection, and load times are high.) Even if you don't need all the details of each step I took inside the city walls, zoom in and marvel at the city's warren of streets, etc.
