One trip, three wonders....

Not bad!

While on the one hand, I'm a little skeptical of all "lists" of "x top whatsits", on the other hand, I'm not too skeptical that I can't enjoy Tauck's inclusion of three of the Wonders of the Ancient World in our tour!

We visited the sites of the following. In each case, the link takes you to the Wikipedia article, in case my brief notes, which follow, leave you hungry for more.

Mausoleum

We visited (Bodrum, Turkey, 27 June) the site of the tomb of Mausolus, the structure which gave rise to the word "mausoleum". Significant ruins, and you can get a good sense of what was there. Built 351 BC, lost to flooding "by AD 1494"... presumably it was relatively intact up to near that date? (I will try to get back to this, do more. If this or the other refs like it persist after the end of June (2012!), please email me (below), and tell me to get going!)

Colossus of Rhodes

We berthed at a dock just beside the harbor where the Colossus of Rhodes stood. (Rhodes, 26 June) Built about 290 BC, lost to earthquake 226 BC. (I will try to get back to this, do more.)

Temple of Artemis

We visited a museum connected with the Temple of Artemis, near where it stood, and passed by the site. (Ephesus, 28 June) Built about 550 BC. Burned down 356 BC by Herostratus. Rebuilt. Plundered by Goths, 262 AD. (I will try to get back to this, do more.)

Sadly, of all the Ancient Wonders, only one is more than a ruin today. (Can you think which that would be? Click here for Answer!)(Photo from a trip I did with Cornell's Adult University.)

As ever, here's a link to the Wikipedia article on the Seven Wonders, if you want to know more.

The others, the sites of which we didn't visit, are....
