Besides this page, I also offer an overview, with maps.
And... a page with the details of our activities, listed day by day.
I've been extremely lucky in the travel I've been able to do.
Most of my trip reports have had a strong chronological backbone.
But that wouldn't work well this, my trip to Macaronesia with National Geographic/ Lindblad.
We had fifteen days of very comfortable living on a ship, with wonderful people in many departments doing a fabulous job of making our time enjoyable and worthwhile. Along the way, we visiting numerous and varied islands from Cabo Verde to the Azores... a voyage of 1900 miles.
We visited many volcanic islands. Big ones. Small ones. Green ones. Brown ones. (Most were both... more on this later!)
We had numerous excellent lectures. We did things on the islands which in some ways "merely" repeated what we'd done on a previous island... but we did not "just repeat" things. Always there were variations. Comparing this walk/ hill/ lava field with ones we'd seen elsewhere was always interesting.
If you like eating ice cream, you don't stop after eating one bowl, do you?
So for this trip, I am going to use this page do some general descriptions of things that reprised during our fifteen days. When something was specific to one experience, I may make mention of it over on an "itinerary" page. A few photos I'm especially pleased with may appear in more than one place, but I will try to eschew duplication of text.
I hope that between them, my pages will will give you some idea of the wondrous and enjoyable things that I experienced. I'm sorry I can't report them more effectively. I hope one day you will have the good fortune to travel with National Geographic/ Lindblad or similar and see such things firsthand.
The people looking after us
Head and shoulders above all of my memories of this trip will my memories of how superbly everyone responsible for our welfare and enjoyment did their jobs.
In no particular order...
This was the "highlight" that came to my mind first when I sat down after the trip to build this page.
I hope my impression that they all enjoyed working together reflected the reality. They certainly deserved to enjoy themselves, if that was happening while they worked so hard and effectively on our behalf.
MORE on "the people", and more highlights... TO FOLLOW!
Speaking of the people who looked after us on the ship reminds me of an essay with photographs by my sister which I hope you will read. She provides a lovely description of something that was great fun.

The islands- dimensions
There are going to be several sections on the islands in due course.
Visiting the islands, and being told something about them reminded me of something.
Everest is, of course, the highest point on earth, by the simple metric of "height above sea level". But if you've visited Denali ("Mt. McKinley", Alaska) you've "seen" "more mountain" that you will see if you visit Everest.
You may have heard that the Hawaiian islands are much bigger mountains than they seem... that the "plain" the rise out of is a long way down under the sea.
A similar story plays out in Macaronesia (the islands we visited). The image shows a part of our journey. Most of the water we were on was very, deep... and yet there were still the impressive islands dotted across the sea floor.
I spent many hours on the subject... I hope you will indulge me with a visit to the sub-page I wrote after visiting the region and the islands.
