Some details of art of Corregio seen

Italy, June 2014, with Cornell Adult University

This is a "detail" page of my account of the wonderful trip arranged by Cornell's Adult University to the region of Parma and Bologna in June 2014

This page looks at some masterpieces by Correggio from about 1520 which we were lucky enough to see.

There is also a "top" page for the trip, with an overview, and links to some other pages relating to the trip.

For the moment, I fear it merely has a few images around which I will be weaving a story in due course...

Whatever success I may have had with capturing the beauty of this masterpiece is as nothing to the effect of the real thing.

The fresco is on the vaulted ceiling of quite a small, square room. The lighting is not bright, but the color balance is good.

The colors just glow. The flesh tones are golden, and then there are the gold elements in the pergola... dressed in actual gold leaf, if I'm not mistaken. The blues are superb... and between them, there is a play on the timeless blue/ yellow complement.

The figures are "alive". So many putti are dull, anatomically dubious, and doing nothing interesting. Not these.

The painting makes you feel that you are under a pergola, with putti up to all sorts of things on the top of it. Below the pergola, seemingly surrounding the tops of the walls are the monochrome lunettes. Their simplicity in contrast to the richness of what is above is very effective. The trompe l'oiel is stunning.

There's much more to say, but I have to stop there, for now... so that I can at least give you a taste of the other room's ceiling...
