Mycenae and area....

Lion Gate

The Lion Gate, erected during the 13th century BC at Mycenae. (Click for Wikipedia article.. opens in new tab.) The lintels and gate jambs weighed well over 20 tonnes. Some of the blocks of stone in the perimeter wall may have weighed nearly 100 tonnes.

Mycene

On the hilltop in the center foreground, highlighted by the sun, was the palace and military stronghold of Mycenae. Occupied from at least 3500 BC, at it's height in the second century BC, it was declining by 1200 BC.

On the hilltop in the center, highlighted by the sun, about 500 feet across, was the palace and military stronghold of Mycenae. If you look VERY closely, you can see people on the top. (Click for Wikipedia article.. opens in new tab.) Occupied from at least 3500 BC, it was at it's height in the second century BC. By 1200 BC it was in decline.

There is no doubt that there was a city of Troy. And someone, somewhere, negotiated an alliance between many Greek city states to attack Troy. And the "headquarters" of that was probably on this hilltop. Here ruled Agamemnon.

Into the tunnel down to the cistern... quite a story, which I will try to write up in due course. There were no lights, other than lights we happened to have with us. And "not safe". Be still my heart. Glad I got here before the lawyers... and that no one twisted an ankle, or worse, below ground.
