Africa: November 2004 (Trip details)

The story of the trip....

We started with a few days in Capetown, South Africa, which I enjoyed. It seemed to share some of California's more positive traits. Just south of Capetown is "Cape Point", which has been made a National Park. The following picture doesn't do justice to the scale of Cape Point. At a guess, the cliffs here are several hundred feet high.

Cape Point

The next photo was taken from the top of Table Mountain, looking north. In the distance, at "A", you can see Robben Island, where Mr. Mandela was held for so many years. Our hotel was in a modern re-development of the historical waterfront area, at "B". "C" is the center of town.

Our next stop was Victoria Falls. We stayed in Zambia, but Zimbabwe is in this photo, too. (The promontory in the forground. The border is in the middle of the bridge.) Our hotel was at "A"... we could see the mist rising from the falls from out hotel... One morning, we walked around the edge, ending up at the point marked "B". Note that the Falls fall into a crack- these falls are not like so many others where water falls over an escarpment.
Victoria Falls

After Victoria Falls, we went into the bush in Botswana. First at Chobe, and then in the Okavango Delta. Here we see the intrepid travellers and our faithful vehicles. There were other activities on offer, but I tended to avail myself of game drives and walks most of the time.
Land Cruisers

The following was the tent I shared with my travelling companion. The mark on the tree... which is about 8 feet from the platform... was made by an elephant eating the trees bark. And we think that the deer are hard on gardeners in Connecticut! (We were not "at home" when this elephant came tol call.)

Many thanks to Mr. Bill Spencer, Ker & Downey (Kanana and Shinde camps), and the Muchenje Lodge, Chobe, for a wonderful experience. Also the area and people of Capetown, South Africa, and the Royal Livingstone Hotel, Zambia
