Africa: November 2004 (Wildlife)

More wildlife....

Meet "Hector". Yes... he is big.... not the biggest elephant I saw, but bigger than most. He liked to visit us at Kanana.

Hector's picture was taken from my tent. The trees behind him are the trees which define the perimeter of our camp, which he is inside. See the little post marked "A", lower left? That is one of the lights for the path to our tents. You can just see one of them peeking out behind Hector, and though the gap between his front legs. One night, he was feeding on the bushes by our tent. He was so close that his normal breathing was audible, let alone any coughs. Speaking of sounds, the sound of hippos became very familiar.

Bird

Buffalo- an impressive animal. On the occasion of taking this picture I was in a Land Cruiser, using a telephoto lens. On another occasion, I was on foot, about 40' from 8 buffalo. They are not as dangerous as hippos.

We had great good forune in seeing a small pack of wild dogs. They are an endangered species. We also found the remains of an impala they had eaten about an hour before our visit to the site of the meal. Do visit this site for more information on wild dogs.

Wild Dog

Paradise Flycatcher- there was a small colony of them nesting around the dining area at Kanana.

And last.....

.... but NOT least....

.........some friends I made at an ostrich farm just outside the Cape Point National park....
