Egypt with Cornell Adult University

3-15 November, 2010

Local life

This is a crude start... apologies for current rough edges

This is a subsidiary page. If you haven't been there already, the main page is the place to start.

I will concentrate images of general interest here, and eventually do other pages which will contain photos more of interest to the trip's participants, e.g. us with various people we met.

xx

These pages will concentrate on "old" modern Egypt, because that is where I found the photos that interested me most. However, don't get the idea that Egypt is "backwards". I hope photo to the right will help dispell that mis-understanding? (It is looking north at the front of the Four Seasons at San Stefano, where we stayed, in east Alexandria. The sea is just beyond the road you can see.) The country is undertaking huge infrastructure projects. The world done at the Museum of Islamic Art... which I was not, alas, allowed to photograph, is superb. Etc, Etc.

xx

More proof of Egypt's presence in the "first" world... maybe. Alexandria. Sadly, it must be admitted that this picture is a little mis-leading. The roads we were on tended to be moving less well, and rather more full of traffic. Ah, "progress". At least in this land there are fewer Mr and Ms Clipboards around to make life a misery (and safe), and crossing the road on foot was sometimes an entertaining sport. the absence of Clipboards also gave rise to an interesting variety in the vehicles encountered, and their creative interpretation of what is "okay". Bus stops, etc, formal and informal, abound on what would be "highways" in the US.

xx

Yes- horse drawn... but don't worry, he won't have trouble keeping up with the traffic. (Alexandria)

xx

If I gave my photos titles, this one might be "The Negotiators".

xx

Cats: common. Dogs: Not, sadly. (Seen as "unclean" by some moslems.) Happily, Tarek had three goreous golden retrievers who gave me a "dog fix" to see me through.

xx

A family outing, on the sea wall in Alexandria.

xx

Our guess? Cotton candy. Alexandria seafront.

xx

Like dates? Looked like a good crop was on the way this year.

xx

Need new slippers? A display hanging above a street trader's stall.

xx

xx

Boat handlers, Aswan.

xx

Only two streets away from the "tourist" steets... a different world. No hassle to buy.

xx

My escorts, same street as vegetable vendor.

xx

I was very pleasantly surprized by the water quality in the Nile. Cruise ships must have holding tanks. Lots of fish, fishing, fish eating birds.

xx

(Cairo) "Yes, we're at Opera Square. Bus should be along soon..."

This is far from complete... many more photos to come.

Stay tuned!

Don't forget: There are other pages with more information. And at 23Nov10, this collection of photos is still evolving.
