Animal tracks

I've turned each track so that the animal is moving to the right... I hope! This sometimes plays havoc with your perception of the indent of the print into the soil because of lighting issues. I've used my photomanipulation software (PhotoPlus) to move my knife closer to the track in some cases. Where I forgot to include the knife, and have inserted it after the fact, I've said so.

Tracks photographed at Jack's's Camp, Kalahari Desert, Botswana

lion tracks

Black maned lion. Sadly, we didn't see the individual responsible for these tracks. Are you impressed by the guide? Imagine telling the color of the lion's mane's from the tracks! (If that is too obscure, I'll take my tongue out of my cheek to tell you that "black maned" is the sub-species name.)

aardwolf tracks

Aardwolf tracks. I've only seen tracks of this animal. Guess I just have to go back to Africa again...

jackal tracks

Jackal tracks. These friendly little fellows popped up regularly as we travelled around the area.

Tracks photographed at Stanley's Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana

I saw most of these animals elsewhere, too of course... I just happened to photograph their tracks at Stanley's Camp.

Hyena... claws, two pads at back. Line across back of pads at angle to direction of travel, as indicated by the pale blue lines. (If perpendicular, track is wild dog.)

Leopard... no claws, three pads at back.

African wild cat... housecat size, and they interbreed, which is endangering the "pure" African wld cat. The people at Emdoneni Lodge Animal Care and Rehab weren't best pleased when I cut the wire of their enclosure to give you a good view of the cat, but the mesh was too small to put the camera close enough to lose it that way. (Track seen in the wild, at Stanley's Camp.)
